I recently spent six weeks out in Boston, USA shooting 82 short drama scenes for Linguaphone.
Here is a short re-cap of this project shot using the 101 and my in-house prime lenses.
Put simply, the 101 is a cross between a 35mm movie camera and a conventional video camera.
It gives a beautiful shallow depth of field but without the fiddling about
normally associated with using a DSLR.
Unlike DSLRs, this is a professional, all in one shooting package, specifically designed for shooting
video and sound, not just a stills camera that can also happen to shoot video.
It has full timecode, XLR inputs for professional sound and none of the image problems of the DSLRs
In addition, the 101 uses 35mm lenses and shoots full 1920 x1080 HD which can easily be imported into
FCP, Premiere Pro and Avid.
Shallow DOF is all about chip size and the 101’s is approximately the same size as a 35mm film frame which means it produces an image that looks and feels very much like film.
The 101 has also been approved by the BBC as an acquisition camera for their HD channels.
This means you can use it to shoot your broadcast project and be confident that it
meets the BBC’s HD technical specs.
In short, this camera produces stunning images that conventional video just cannot compete with.
It is perfect for adding that ‘35mm’ film look to drama and for making documentaries look amazing.
